2,556th Buddha Jayanti observed

The 2,556th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha was marked today with various programmes across the country.

The Buddhist community offered special prayers to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of lord Buddha. Special programmes were organised in the Stupas and Buddha Gompas in the capital.

Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born on the full moon day of Baishakh month in Lumbini of Nepal 2,556 years ago. He got enlightened and died on the same day.

Also known as the as the light of Asia, Buddha is regarded as harbinger of peace who taught the world the ideals of non-violence.

Buddha’s teachings are followed in many countries including Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the South East Asian countries of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and Indonesia. In his message, on the occasion, President Yadav expressed hope that Buddha Jayanti will boost national harmony and brotherhood among people.

Buddha’s message of peace, non-violence and love are still relevant, President Yadav said.

Vice President Paramananda Jha, speaking at Buddha’s birth anniversary programme held on the premise of Swoyambhunath Stupa today expressed happiness over the new environment of trust among political parties for the upcoming constitution and unity government.

Vice President Jha also hailed the religious harmony existing in Nepali society. The government, private and religious organisations launched special programmes on the occasion to help promote Visit Lumbini Year 2012.
