Bridge to Mt. Everest base camp swept away

SOLUKHUMBU: A truss bridge over a local stream on the way to Mt. Everest base camp has been swept away by flood on Wednesday afternoon.

The truss bridge over the Imja stream was swept away by the swollen stream.

It was the last bridge on the trail to Mt. Everest Base camp from here, said Dorji Gyalzen Sherpa, Chairman at the Tabuche Buffer Zone Users Committee, Khumjung.

With this the way to the base camp has been blocked and tourists and locals using this route are hit hard. If they choose to use an alternative way to the base camp it takes more than a day, Sherpa said.

The bridge should be reconstructed soon otherwise the locals will face tough time, he added.
