NTB needs to be free from politics

Tourism entrepreneurs, at a programme today, urged the government to make Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) free from politics. During the programme, representatives from the private sector expressed an urgent need to make the autonomous body free from politics.

“NTB has changed a lot. It is getting more politicised every day,” said private sector representative at
the board Pampha Dhamala. “NTB is suffering as it is over politicised,” she said, adding that due to excess politicisation, the board has failed to get a new chief executive officer.

“Selection of a CEO is just like hiring any other employee at an office but the process at NTB is getting more critical,” she said. Due to the unending dispute among the board members, there are assumptions that NTB might announce the appointment of an acting CEO soon. NTB, currently, has Subash
Nirola as the officiating CEO to look after its daily activities.

Due to conflicting interests and legal hassles, Nepal Tourism Board has been without a chief executive for almost 21 months. The tenure of then CEO Prachanda Man Shrestha had expired on October 31, 2011.

The tenure of the board members had also expired on December 1, 2011, but a board was later instated by a board member selection committee formed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.
