Pokhara country's cleanest city

Pokhara: Leaving Dharan and Tansen behind, Pokhara Sub-metropolis was today declared the cleanest city in the country. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Solid Waste Management Technical Support Centre, under the Ministry for Urban Development, bestowed the title of the cleanest city-2013 on Pokhara.

Urban Development Minister Chhabiraj Pant asked other municipalities to follow in the footsteps of the Pokhara Sub-metropolis. Minister Pant handed over the prize to Pokhara Sub-metropolis Chief Executive Officer Jhalakram Adhikary at a programme organised in the Capital today.

Pokhara sub-metropolis will receive an additional grant for waste management and environmental improvement in the next fiscal year. A source said Pokhara might receive a grant of more than Rs 4 million on being the cleanest city in the next fiscal year.

Waste management, sewage system, community mobilisation in sanitation, environment-friendly infrastructure, tree plantation and private public partnership on environment sanitation were among the criteria used to declare Pokhara the cleanest city. Adhikary said Pokhara was declared the cleanest city, as it had made more progress than other cities on the set criteria.

Dharan and Tansen were the second and third cleanest cities, respectively.

Adhikary said residential representatives from the EU showed positive concern about Pokhara’s development.

He lauded Pokhrelis for making Pokhara the cleanest city.

It has been three years that Pokhara has stopped the use of black plastic bags.

Tourism entrepreneur and social worker Govindraj Pahadi said though Pokhara was declared the cleanest city still lots needed to be done. “The award has added additional responsibility on us,” Pahadi added.
