News

People across the nation have been observing Mata Tirtha Aunsi (Mother’s Day) on Thursday as a celebration of love and bond between mothers and children.

According to Hindu tradition, Mata Tirtha Aunsi is celebrated in the Nepali month of Baisakh every year. On this day, children revere their mothers for giving birth to them and providing protection.

Main market places in Kathmandu Valley has been witnessing increasing footfalls since early morning with people shopping for sweets, fruits and gifts to give to their mothers. Children of deceased mothers have been thronging Mata Tirtha, a famous religious place near Thankot to take a holy bath.

The Hindu legend has it that a man who had walked through Mata Tirtha saw his dead mother in the pond on the day of Mata Tirtha Aunsi and since then people started observing this day by going to Mata Tirtha.

People also performed ‘Shraddha’, a Hindu ritual of making offering to the deceased, at different religious sites throughout the country in memory of their departed mothers.
