Dharahara tourist package opposed

Different organisations have sought cancellation of an agreement signed between Kathmandu Metropolitan City Hanumandhoka Durbar Preservation Programme and Side Walkers Pvt Ltd. The agreement stipulates a tourist package that includes Hanumandhoka Museum visit and ascent of the historic Dharahara for a lump sum of Rs 1,000.

Naresh Tamrakar, president of Newa Dey Dabu, said the locals have the first right over the ownership or management of historical and cultural heritages as per ILO 169.

Management of the world heritage site should not be handed over to a private sector company, said Dr Chunda Bajracharya, a culture expert.

Newa Jagaran Manch chairman Sujiv Bajracharya demanded that the government prevent commercialisation of heritage sites, whereas rights activist Naresh Bir Shakya stressed on the need for a movement to safeguard such sites.

Former chairman of KMC ward number 20, Bijaya Krishna Shrestha, said the state should preserve historic sites
