Charikot and Kalinchowk: In pursuit of solitude

While all of us are occupied with our lives in Kathmandu, we only take out time for grand treks thinking that’s the only escape worth exploring. We often tend to ignore the allure that unfrequented destinations hold and Eastern in Nepal is one such rarely visited destination. With winter looming in, plan a trip to the Eastern part of the country, a place which never comes first on the go-to list for many of us which means you have the place all to yourself. If you’re someone who enjoys stepping out of the comfort zone every once in a while, head out to the other direction. Ring in the New Year in Charikot and Kalinchowk. It’s one of the lesser known winter destinations Nepal has, and guess what, if you’re lucky enough you might get to see the season’s first snowfall.

Mesmerising start
One-Hundred-and-thirty-five kilometers away from the Valley rests a beautiful town-Dolakha, home to major holy shrines; it also treats you to magnificent views of the mountains. Leave the dust and toxic fumes behind as you make your way out of Bhaktapur towards Dhulikhel. Effortlessly hit the highway and breathe in the fresh air as you drive towards Dolalghat. If it’s a clear day, enjoy the picturesque view of the landscapes and snow-capped mountains.

One of the most popular destinations known for delectable fish fries and curries in Malekhu, but the small town of Dolalghat equally treats its visitors with fresh and mouth-watering fish and prawn dishes. Don’t hesitate to stop by local eateries at Dolalghat as it serves one of the best varieties of fish in the country. Small bumps and dusty trail will welcome you as you cross Dolalghat, prepare yourself for a topsy-turvy ride. Despite the dusty roads, you’ll surely feel the cold wind caressing you as you make your way to Charikot.

Your safe heaven
Home to many hotels and lodges Charikot—the headquarter of Dolakha District is an ideal destination for you to take refuge in. The town is located at an altitude of 1,554-mt. with attractions and eateries to cater to your choice, this place also treats you with a spectacular view of Mount Gaurishankhar. Take a quick stroll around the place and spend your evenings in one of the many hotels in main bazaar, or if you fancy some place quiet then you can opt for hotels located on the hilltop.
In the morning, take a stroll through the famous junction—Sattobato—and splurge on some organic fruits and vegetables from the local vendors on Saturdays. Charikot is also blessed with many attractions, if you’re planning to spend some time in this beautiful town, head to Kotihom, Pashupati Temple and also pay a visit to the famous gompa, and unwind in the tranquil ambience and rejuvenate.

Contemporary and cultural setting—Dolakha Bhimsen
This is a religiously significant destination and if you’re the kind whose travels remain incomplete without paying your respects to the deities then keep Dolakha Bhimsen on your must-visit list. A 15-minute ride from Charikot will take you to this holy place. Thousands of pilgrims come to Dolakha Bimsen every year. The temple is dedicated to the legendary Bhim, second of the Panch Pandawas. This pagoda-style temple of Dolakha Bhimsen comprises of a triangular shaped stone statue of Lord Bhim. A park located near the temple—Channapuja Hariyali Park is a perfect place to spend your winter days relaxing under the warm rays of the sun.

With the Himalayas—Kalinchowk
Flaunting picturesque views of the splendid mountains, Kalinchowk is one of the must visit places during winter. A half an hour ride from Charikot will lead you to a small village, Kuri. Icy sidewalks and thatched huts, will transport you to a village akin to the ones you see in postcards.
The hiking trail starts from Kuri Village; walk up the trail to get a splendid view of the glorious mountain range. On your way up, splurge on some churpis and snacks sold along the trail. Soak up the tranquil atmosphere and indulge in an enjoyable conversation with the locals and visitors from all around the world on your way up.

Upon reaching the hilltop, you’ll find small eateries selling steaming cups of tea and coffee. On the hilltop sits Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple, at an altitude of 3842-mt above sea level. The temple is sacred to Hindu devotees and is believed to be the abode of Goddess Kali.

Catch the magnificent sight of the mountains, and take in the air filled with piety. The trail back to the village is an enjoyable one. Treat yourself to a hearty bowl of thukpa and steaming momo at Kuri Village. If you’re planning to stay one more night, there are ample of lodges in the village. The eastern side of Nepal is without a doubt a place worth exploring. We always trend to plan our trips to popular destinations months in advance, but an impromptu visit to Dolakha District will give you a new perspective on travelling Nepal.
